Rum Ba-Ba shivered. Brrr! A cold wind blew across the field. It bent all the stalks of grass. It rattled the leaves on the trees and made the fence sway, first one way then the other.
“Creak creak,” moaned the fence. “Brrr!” said the sheep. They stood closer and closer together to get out of the wind. But the wind blew at the sheep on the edge of the flock. They tried to push their way into the middle. But there were still sheep left on the outside. They complained too, so the sheep started to argue with each other. They pushed and they shoved and they bleated.
“I’ve had enough of this,” said Rum Ba-Ba. “I’ve thought of a better way to keep warm.”
And he trotted right into the middle of the field. The wind was pleased about this and blew and blew at Rum Ba-Ba.
“Go away, horrid wind!” shouted Rum Ba-Ba and he started to do a little dance to keep warm. First he kicked his back legs into the air. Then he kicked with his front legs. He felt a little warmer doing this.
“I’ve got springs in my toes,” he sang. He made up a tune as he skipped. “Hoof-hoof-hoofing all day long.”
‘That doesn’t rhyme,’ thought Rum Ba-Ba. But sheep are not very good at thinking up rhymes. Especially when they are cold sheep.
The rest of the flock whispered to each other. “Look at Rum Ba-Ba! Do you think he has gone mad? He always was a lively young sheep - but dancing in the middle of the field is very odd.”
Rum Ba-Ba turned to the flock and he laughed. “I know you think I’m silly,” he bleated, “but dancing makes the wind go away. Why don’t you join in?”
“OK, we will!” said one of the sheep and ran to Rum Ba-Ba. One by one all the sheep joined them. Even the older ones remembered how to dance and lifted their hooves. They all jumped up and down in excitement.
“Are you ready?” asked Rum Ba-Ba. “Let’s start! One, two three - stamp stamp stamp!”
And hundreds of hooves stamped the grass at once.
“Very good,” said Rum Ba-Ba. “Now you’ve got the idea!” And he led them in a long dance. All over the field they went, kicking and jumping. Then they danced in a line, one behind the other. Round and round the tree they trotted. Then they went skipping down the field. “Tap tap tap - we can dance! Stamp stamp stamp - we can prance!” And they sang and they danced until they were very tired.
“Listen!” said Rum Ba-Ba. “The wind has gone away!” All the sheep stopped dancing. They put their heads on one side and listened very hard. It was true. The wind had gone.
The sheep were so pleased that they did another run round the field to celebrate.
“How clever we were!” they shouted. “We frightened the wind. It won’t come back again today. It will remember how we shouted and danced.” And they jumped up and down with glee.
